I create straightforward web sites whose primary driver is function rather than form - the function being to attract clients to the business. It has to look good as well, of course, but the business purpose of a law firm web site is to be found by people who want to buy the services which the firm is offering and to encourage them to buy from you.

Many law firm web sites seem to have lost sight of these basic objectives. Whilst it is not quite true that the business utility of a web site is in inverse proportion to its style and effects, it is very often true that the business purpose - bringing in clients - has taken second place to appearance.

Achieving the business purpose requires an understanding of the business in order to portray it on the Web. To get the search hits and attract the clients, one has to try and work out what search terms they will use to find businesses like yours, and what they will want to find when they get there. Logically, in fact, one approaches it the other way round - what do they want to find and how will they look for it?

This involves a set of skills entirely different from the conventional idea of a web designer and a different balance between the aesthetic-cum-technical and the commercial objectives behind the site.

The relevant skills are editorial as well as technical and involve an understanding of your business and its clients, the legal advice which you are selling, and the mechanics of web site optimisation.
